CFFC Annual Picnic and Fun Day

    Casting Clinic & Casting Competition

    Casting Clinic:
The following two casting classes will be taught using grass and water where most appropriate.  You will have both small group and one on one instruction to make sure you leave with a new set of casting skills. If you don’t have your own fly rod, let us know on the registration form and we will bring one for you.

    Time: 10:00 am
Fly Casting for Beginners – Being able to cast accurately with a fly rod is one of the most important skills for a fly fisherman. It’s also not nearly as hard as people might have you believe. Come learn the basics of how the fly rod works, develop a good roll cast for those tight situations often found on North Carolina streams and learn to accurately deliver your fly where you think it needs to go.

Fly Casting for Intermediates – Once you have mastered the basics and caught a few fish, you will discover there are some things you would still like to be able to do with a fly rod, but don’t quite know how to master. Aerial mends are very useful to fool spooky fish. You can bend your fly line to mend your line before it hits the water to get a perfect drift without spooking any fish. Maybe you have trouble getting under those low hanging branches or around that rock or stump between you and the fish. You need a curve cast. There is even a special cast that is a favorite of Joe Humphreys that helps you get your fly all the way to the bottom in a hurry. Tell us what you need to do and we will find an instructor to help you do it.

    Casting Competition:
    Time: 2:00 pm
There will be a fun time at the end of the event to see who can cast the most accurately and longest distance.

Club Outings: Due to CFFC liabilities anyone attending a club outing must be up to date with their CFFC and FFI (Fly Fishing International) memberships. Guests or lapsed members must sign a release form at the gathering or you can link to the release form. You can print, fill it out and bring it with you to the outing. Release Form

    Tradd Little

Featured Fly Tier and Fly Fisherman

Tradd is 14 years old and lives in Greenville South Carolina. He started tying in 2014 at 11 years old. He has tied at several fly tying conventions. He recently entered flies in ten categories at the Sowbug Roundup in Mountain Home Arkansas. He won 1st place in five categories plus the Waspi competition.

Tradd’s favorite fly is a classic dressed salmon fly which took him six hours to tie. He is not just a fly tier. His largest trout is a thirty two inch brown that he caught on one of his flies.

Tradd has a website “Tradd’s Flies” with over 200 patterns, a blog and how to videos. Tradd is active in coaching other young fly tiers and fly fishers. He gets great support from his father Rusty Little.

In the White River Room (Fly Shop)
    www.facebook.com/bpscharlotte

We will be having a Lying and Tying session at Bass Pro Shop, Concord, NC. This is just a get together, where you can bring your vise and material and just enjoy an evening of fly tying. Of course there is some lying about how big the fish was and of course how my fly is one that catch all of the big fish.

There is no charge or  registration for any of the Lying & Tying Sessions. If you want to just come by and watch and learn, feel free to join us, you are more than welcome. You will have a chance to meet some of the fly tiers and they will be glad to give you advice. If you don't have a vice we can bring a loaner and you will find folks there to help you. If you need a loaner vice please email us at gjones1@charter.net

We will start around 5:30 PM and finish around 8:30 PM at the Bass Pro Shop in the White River Fly Shop room in the back of the store.

Will be scheduling for more in 2017 so watch the events calendar for dates and times. Look forward to seeing you there.

    Wilson Creek DH Day Trip

Please register if you will attend!

On Tuesday, December 5th the CFFC will host an outing to Wilson Creek. Wilson Creek is located about 20 miles outside of Morganton. For those of you not familiar with the area, take I- 40 West, towards Asheville. Take exit 100, turn right and go about 4 miles. The road will dead end into state route 181. Turn left, go about 10 miles and make a right onto Brown Mountain Beach Road. There is a white church with steeple very visible at this turn. Follow Brown Mountain Beach road about 5 miles, and look for the signs for Wilson Creek, Brown Mountain Beach Resort and Mortimer Campground. You will cross a bridge over Wilson creek just before THE LEFT TURN onto the road to Brown Mountain Beach. You can also go to Google Maps and search for Mortimer NC and it will show you directions.

Brown Mountain Beach Road is a combination of paved and dirt (very navigable) road.

Morning Meeting Place: For those who would like to meet up first for tips, pointers, etc., we will meet at the parking lot just past and to the right of the THIRD BRIDGE that you will cross over. It will be a fairly long drive. (Approximately 8 miles) At this point, Wilson Creek moves from your right side to your left side and the entry to the parking lot is just a few feet past the bridge. Just prior to this bridge, you will see an old abandoned mill on your right. You will then go around a large curve and the bridge will come up soon thereafter. For more detailed directions, see picture below. We will meet in the parking lot at 9:00 AM.

Please bring your own lunch, beverages, etc. We will meet at the picnic shelter at the Forest Service’s Mortimer campground about 12:00. Weather can be unpredictable so please bring flexible clothing.

Club Outings: Due to CFFC liabilities anyone attending a club outing must be up to date with their CFFC and FFI memberships. Guests or lapsed members must sign a release form at the gathering or you can link to the release form. You can print, fill it out and bring it with you to the outing. Release Form

For those of you new to North Carolina Trout Seasons, Delayed Harvest is the NC state's modified Catch and Release program. March, April and May, the Department of Wildlife Resources stocks selected streams ( those marked with Black and White diamond shaped signs) for Catch and Release, single hook, artificial lure only fishing. In short all fish caught must be released.

CFFC North Toe River, Mitchell County  Saturday,  December 9, 2017 Day Trip
    Spruce Pines NC

Nestled in the mountains is one of the jewels of North Carolina trout fishing, the North Toe River, and one of the shiniest baubles as the section that flows through the town of Spruce Pine. Access is outstanding; you can park on a paved lot, and there are lots of trout.

A section of slightly more than two miles, from the US 19E Bridge east of town to the NC 226 Bridge north of town is managed by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission as delayed-harvest waters (DH), and is classified as the Spruce Pine Mountain Heritage Trout Water.

The river is heavily stocked — with plenty of big trout which makes for some of the best fishing in the state!

Click HERE for a more detailed location of river in Spruce Pine.
